Here is an easy tutorial for turning a plain top into nautical chic. I was inspired by this Sailing Stripes Blouse from Anthropologie shown below. I didn’t try to recreate it exactly. Instead, I decided to make my neckline ruffled.
Here is the Anthropologie shirt:
I started with a navy blue tank top ($5.50 from Forever21):
I then cut 2 strips of fabric measuring 3 inches wide by about 22″ long. I cut one end of each strip into a point, fray checked all the edges and then tied a knot as shown below.

I then aligned the knot with the center front of my top. I took the strips of fabric above the knot and randomly folded them and pinned them in place along the neckline.
I then cut more strips of fabric and continued folding and pinning until I got all the way around the neckline.
Lastly, I stitched around the neckline to hold everything in place.

seriously cute.
cuter than the original!

I have a bunch of really really long, narrow vintage scarves. I am tempted to try this using these. Thanks for the inspiration!
I agree – your’s is MUCH cuter than the original! I love he striped fabric you used – it is perfect.
I would have bought your’s over the original. Totally cute!!
Awesome Idea! Def want to try this!
Great idea. Very thrifty, very nifty. I love Anthropologie but agree that this kicks the butt of the original!
Absolutely love this! The collar is so attractive.
